REGULAR IRREGULARITY

Seria of the lino cut prints is based on my observation on patterns. More precisely: on regular and irregular patterns. I see patterns as an essence of all material and immaterial existing things.

My decision is to print all the layers of the linocut prints in white color where I use oxides to powder separate layers in different highlights in such a way that each of them would reflect the light differently. My aim is to create the pattern based prints which observed from the distances would be immaterial and invisible while coming closer they would become material and very visual.

I use both methods of pattern construction while carving lino matrixes: a primal irregular shape of one thing, for ex.: algae, rose, water, soil etc. and repeating the same shape in regular manner. Even the shape is the same every time carved in to a matrix it becomes different, that is a way regular pattern becomes irregular and irregular pattern becomes regular.

My starting point for this seria were studies of Persian carpets, which are great part of Persian art weaved according certain rules being used designing and creating rugs and carpets. There are 2 certain styles of Persian carpets. The ancient tribal method of weaving rug, which was used among most of nomadic tribes to design and weave rugs and a new one - city carpet - design method developed in 15th century. The carpets design revolution was a change in carpets style, where linear miniatures in tribal rugs were changed into center based design mirrored along the long or short axis of the city carpet to obtain harmony and rhythm.

I interpreted carpets as some reflection of change in process of thinking of human kind. The change is obvious when irregular pattern of the mind which is seen in the tribal rugs are changed into regular aesthetical pattern of the mind reflecting in the city carpets.

City is the place where can be appropriated, assimilated and transformed myriads of different traditions and influences. In tribal world the inner logic of one tradition can be kept and preserved for centuries while urban artist sees many traditions in one time and one place and this rather becomes for him an aesthetic game.

Carpets and rugs for me represent material origins of the physically visible patterns abstracted from the surrounding environment reflecting the invisible inner pattern…
